How I Ended Up Putting Ducts on the Snapmaker u1 POD (Even Though I Didn't Really Want To 😅)

Some projects are born in a single evening.

And then there are projects like this one.

The kind that start with a simple idea and somehow turn into an endless cycle of redesigns, second thoughts, compromises, testing, and those late-night CAD sessions where you find yourself asking:

"Why did I even start this?" 😂

Over the past few months, I've received a ton of feedback, suggestions, requests, messages, and ideas from the community regarding the POD project for the Snapmaker U1.

Some requests were very similar.

Some completely contradicted each other.

And some sounded absolutely perfect... right up until you actually tried to make them work in the real world.

As always, I tried to listen to everyone, filter out the noise, and find a direction that made sense—not just technically, but practically as well.

And I think I've finally gotten there.

Chapter 1

"The POD Needs to Breathe"

One of the most common requests I've received was the ability to connect an extraction system directly to the POD.

Now, I'll be honest...

I've never been a huge fan of extracting air directly from the chamber.

Not because it doesn't work.

But because, depending on how it's done, it can compromise other characteristics of the enclosure that I personally consider important.

That said...

This project isn't just about what I want.

It's about what you need.

So I decided to put my personal preferences aside and work on a solution that would give users the flexibility they've been asking for.

After quite a few design iterations, prototypes, and CAD revisions, this is where we landed.

A modular extraction system that can be installed:

🔹 On the right side

🔹 On the left side

🔹 Or on both sides simultaneously

allowing air to be routed either to an external filtration system or directly outside the room.

One thing that was extremely important to me was keeping everything integrated into the overall POD design.

I wanted it to look intentional—not like something that was zip-tied together at 2 AM after three cups of coffee. 😆

Honestly, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Chapter 2

The Quest for the Perfect Heater

If the extraction system was challenging...

The heating solution was an entirely different beast.

This was probably the most difficult part of the entire project.

I looked at countless options.

Some were incredibly effective.

Some were beautifully engineered.

Some seemed absolutely perfect...

Until it came time to actually buy them.

Then reality stepped in.

Availability issues.

Regional restrictions.

Different models depending on the country.

Products that simply aren't accessible to everyone.

From day one, my goal has been to design solutions that people can realistically build and replicate.

Not theoretical solutions.

Not "works great if you happen to live in a specific country" solutions.

Real-world solutions.

Unfortunately, that means there will always be some compromises.

And for those who may have difficulty sourcing the final component I've chosen, I apologize in advance.

I truly tried to find the most balanced option possible.

Chapter 3

The Solution I Didn't Expect

In the end, the answer had been sitting right in front of me the whole time.

The Panda Breath.

Rather than creating an entirely new heating platform or adding another external accessory, I decided to integrate the Panda Breath directly into the rear section of the POD.

Not as an afterthought.

Not as a bolt-on accessory.

But as part of the design itself.

The result is a clean, compact, and integrated solution that feels like it belongs there from the start.

And perhaps most importantly...

It avoids turning the back of the machine into a science fair project made of brackets, adapters, and random printed parts. 😂

So What's Next?

The good news is that the overall direction is finally locked in.

The bad news?

The work isn't finished yet. 😅

Over the next few weeks I'll be focusing on:

✅ Real-world testing

✅ Airflow validation

✅ Final refinements

✅ Documentation

✅ Preparing files for release

For the first time in quite a while, though, I can honestly say that this project is starting to look exactly how I envisioned it.

And that's a pretty great feeling.

A huge thank you to all Supporter Members and followers who continue to share ideas, feedback, suggestions, and sometimes those requests that initially make me say:

"Nope. Not happening."

Only for them to somehow end up in CAD a few weeks later. 😂
